Golden Retriever Holiday Specials

With the Land of PureGold being the World’s largest Golden Retriever site, it seems fitting to provide some special holiday goodies for our Golden visitors. You certainly do not want any mad friends, furry or otherwise, who are disappointed when they do not receive any special presents. Quantities are very limited so do not delay if you see something you like!

Please remember that all purchases support our nonprofit’s mission of supplying cancer treatment grants for working dogs and supporting research in comparative oncology, the study of cancers that occur similarly in people and companion animals. Also, given these tough economic times, donations are near non-existent, so we really depend on your purchases to continue doing our important work.

FREE glossy puppy stickers!

In February 2004, we photographed this unbelievably adorable chubby litter of three 5½-week-old Golden Retriever pups. They were simply too sweet for words. With our special message, we believe these stickers are that much more irresistible. These bright 4 inch wide x 1½ inch high Photo Gloss oval stickers are just great to put on all of your gift packaging or on the backs of letters as a type of seal. Folks get a set for free with all purchases from our Holiday Gift Store page.

A truly Golden Valentine’s Day

Stephen Huneck's newest Golden wonder!

Stephen Huneck's newest Golden wonder!

Stephen Huneck is an internationally-acclaimed and much-collected Vermont artist, sculptor & children’s book writer and illustrator, whose playful hand-carved furniture, sculpture and whimsical Woodcuts prints celebrate the human-canine bond. A self-taught sculptor and wood-carver, Stephen loves the texture that you can only get by hand. He has a collection of tools consisting of over 150 chisels, 30 hand planes and axes, carving almost everyday of the year.

When Stephen does take time off, it is to walk with his Labs, Golden Retriever & Dalmatian. After a near death experience in 1994, Stephen had a vision to build a Dog Chapel. “A place where people can go and celebrate the spiritual bond they have with their dogs,” it is now the largest, and most personal, artwork of his life.

The print above is most unique for many reasons. First, most of the works by Stephen feature Labrador Retrievers, with only a handful of Golden Retriever pieces. And, it has been a veeeeeeeeeery long time since he’s created a Golden Retriever woodcut. He has just begun a new series which will explore many additional breeds and I am thrilled that the Golden was the first in the series. It is just perfect and really so apropos for the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday.

Please come and order a print, supporting our Foundation’s mission with the purchase.

Meet our pal Chris: Barking up the treat tree in Maine!

BARKWHEATS, handmade in Stockton Springs, Maine, are quite unique dog treats. Each ½lb bag contains at least 25 treats, enclosed in packaging made from sustainably harvested cottonwood trees and 100% recycled paperboard. Completely biodegradable, it only takes about 2-3 months to fully degrade in your compost bin! Barkwheats, made with organic and local ingredients, are gluten-free, corn-free, soy-free, sugar-free, salt-free & preservative-free.

Why Dogs Love ‘Em On livestock farms, buckwheat “middlings” (the middle part of the buckwheat milling process after the white flour has been sifted out) are used as feed because of it’s super high protein content and very sweet taste. Even the most picky of dogs can not turn them down!

Centuries ago, peasant farmers in Asia began cultivating a highly nutritious and extremely hardy plant known today as buckwheat. Brought to the northeastern U.S. in the 17th century, buckwheat quickly became an Acadian tradition, used in pancakes and porridges. This miracle plant, now celebrated as a vital source of minerals and amino acids, is a wonderful food source for those who are intolerant of gluten. Despite the name, buckwheat isn’t wheat, nor is it even a grain. It is actually a fruit seed that is related to rhubarb. Unlike other cereal grains, buckwheat is high in the essential amino acids lysine and arginine. With a generous amount of magnesium (86mg in 1 cup), it also relaxes blood vessels and increases blood flow and nutrient delivery. And, it has been shown in studies to contribute to blood sugar control.

BARKWHEATS is one of my foundation store’s newest offerings, and its creator, Chris Roberts, has become my new pal (even though I kid him about being one of those scary 20-something dudes). He has been quite famous in his town of Stockton Springs, appearing on this wonderful news feature below.

Today, I got the cutest order for this product. But, it was confusing as it was purchased by a man named Paul, but being sent to “Jack”. And, Jack had no last name. That was a first as I’ve never received an order with solely a first name. So, I called Paul. It turns out that Paul, is a proud Maine resident, who was buying these treats for his granddog, Yellow Lab Jack. Jack is his daughter’s dog and they now live in Massachusetts.

Paul had seen this wonderful article below in the Bangor Daily News and knew he had to treat his favorite furry boy.

STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine – Visit the test kitchen of Barkwheats Dog Biscuits — one of Maine’s newest and successful cottage industries — and it’s impossible to ignore Chris Roberts’ motivation for his booming new business. They’ll bark at you, give you wet kisses and sniff you with very cold noses. They’ll push open the kitchen door when you arrive and walk you to the car when you leave.

Baxter and Sabine — rescued mixed-breeds — are the two delightful inspirations behind Barkwheats. “I love my dogs and dogs like to eat,” Roberts said simply.

The 27-year-old entrepreneur has unleashed that love, mixed it with a passion for baking, added a hefty affection for local agriculture, and created a full-time business in less than nine months. From his first buckwheat dog biscuit — taste tested, of course, by Baxter and Sabine — Roberts knew he was on to something. Not only has he created an organic product that is in high demand, he also is satisfying his ethical desire to support Maine agriculture as well.

Barkwheats are crisp and delicious (yes, I tasted one; it was sort of like a gingersnap without the sweetness), and the treats are made from mostly Maine ingredients: honey, eggs, parsley, buckwheat and seaweed.

Animal Joy, Sorrow & Empathy — Why these emotions matter!

We have a wonderful new book to recommend on the emotional lives of animals. The book explores animal joy, sorrow and empathy … and why they matter!

The Emotional Lives of Animals: A Leading Scientist Explores Animal Joy, Sorrow, and Empathy – and Why They Matter (2007)
Written by Marc Bekoff. Any dog owner knows that her own pet has feelings, but what evidence exists beyond the anecdotal, and what does this evidence teach us? Bekoff, professor emeritus of biology at the University of Colorado, pores through decades of animal research-behavioral, neurochemical, psychological and environmental-to answer that question, compelling readers to accept both the existence and significance of animal emotions. Seated in the most primitive structures of the brain (pleasure receptors, for example, are biologically correlative in all mammals), emotions have a long evolutionary history. Indeed, as vertebrates became more complex, they developed ever more complex emotional and social lives, “setting rules” that permit group living-a far better survival strategy than going solo.

Along the way, Bekoff forces the reader to re-examine the nature of human beings; our species could not have persevered through the past 100,000 years without the evolution of strong and cohesive social relationships cemented with emotions, a conclusion contrary to contemporary pop sociology notions that prioritize individualism and competition. He also explores, painfully but honestly, the abuse animals regularly withstand in factory farms, research centers and elsewhere, and calls on fellow scientists to practice their discipline with “heart.”

Demonstrating the far-reaching implications for readers’ relationships with any number of living beings, Bekoff’s book is profound, thought-provoking and even touching.

Artist Fred Stone – such a talent

I have been trying to bring some special, and high-end items to our foundation store. While all proteins must be organic or free-range, grass-fed and chemical-free, the art that I offer is somewhat varied. I do love whimsical art and have a few vendors that provide such fancies, but my own art background and formal training was based on the techniques of the old masters such as Rembrandt. That is probably why I just love Fred Stone’s work.

The image here, of a Golden Search and Rescue team from Dade County, Florida, is one that will forever touch our hearts, our own framed copy gazed upon daily. You can click here to learn more about the history of this famous Golden team and Fred’s momentous undertaking. Entitled, PARTNERS, it is Fred’s most famous painting, and sales of its related merchandise has raised over a half million dollars for charities such as the ASPCA, Canine Search & Rescue, and the families of New York City Firefighters who died on 9/11.

I have carried Fred’s Partners items for some time now, this image above available on a poster, canvas, gold-rimmed coffee mug, and t-shirt. Personally, I have the poster framed in my office and also love my mug and t-shirt. In fact, I have bought multiple t-shirts as they have worn out over the years from so much wear.

But, now I have decided to carry much of Fred’s complete equine-themed works as he is the best known painter of horses in the world today. The Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune have called him the most famous painter of horses in the world. His work is in the homes of some of the world’s most notable people including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and in the office of the president in the White House. And, more people own a Fred Stone print than that of any other horse artist in history, making him the most sought after equine artist in the world.

This is one of my favorites, below, but there are so many, with every famous race horse captured so perfectly by Fred’s talented hands. Check it out!

Helping Harley Update

A very special friend from Austin, Texas, Greg Korycki, did a wonderful thing. He took the time, along with his wife, to drive several hours to San Antonio to visit with Andrea and Harley. Greg is a tremendous supporter to and very much involved in Golden Rescue, and has similarly dealt with having medically compromised seniors.

Things have been very sad as Harley seems to be suffering more. He is having severe reactions to the massive steroids that are being administered, and Andrea is wondering if the current regimen is too much for him to bear. Of course, no one can answer those kinds of questions. It is just one of the most painful aspects of loving these furry Golden souls. Well, back to Greg. Here is the letter that he sent to me about the visit (along with a photo of Andrea and her two furry boys, Harley and Teddy, shown above).

I drove down to San Antonio and visited with Harley and Andrea this past Sunday and what a wonderful visit. We met the whole family, Harley, Teddy (dog), and Favi (cat) and Richie (bird). We even met the neighbor’s cat who Andrea is caring for while the neighbor is away!

Andrea is a very humble and modest lady who just wants to help people. She and her furry/feathered family live in a small one bedroom apartment and she has been working part time jobs while attending nursing school, and taking care of Harley (her #1 concern right now). Harley has good days and bad, but his spirit is definitely here. He talks for his treats (his ears perk at the mention of “cookie”) and is very alert. You guys would fall in love with him.

Please send (tierlieb5 at yahoo dot com) Andrea a letter of encouragement. She appreciates (and needs) the support. And, do visit HARLEY’S PAGE to keep up with the latest developments.
