Remembering Golden Mully

Golden Mully with her Favorite Red Ball

We featured Golden Retriever Mully at one of our foundation’s contests over a year ago. She was one of our winners, but sadly has now left her Mom’s side, losing a battle with Myasthenia Gravis. Her life started out RUFF due to a deformed leg/amputation and ended RUFF, but Elizabeth sure hoped she gave her special Golden girl a happy life in-between.

Click here to again experience her story, and share in her Mom’s memories with a wonderful video.

A great recipe … but so bittersweet

I just received the most glorious sugar-free, gluten-free, organic birthday cake recipe. It was sent for my Bone Appetit Recipe Contest.

It was sent by Sharon Wachsler who made it for her Gadget’s ninth, and last, birthday. Gadget worked with Sharon for seven years, trained via positive methods such as the clicker, and provided a critical function for increased independence despite her disabilities.

Sadly, Gadget was diagnosed with Lymphosarcoma in May 2009 and then with a Mast Cell Tumor in September 2009 (which sadly took his life on 11/19/09). A Working Dog Grant from our foundation was utilized for some of Gadget’s chemotherapy treatments.

That means that tomorrow, I will be mailing Sharon a FREE full-sized $9 bag of SuperTreats Pro-Digestive 100% Fruit Chews!

Meet 3-legged Golden Retriever Mully

Golden Mully with her Favorite Red Ball

Mulligan or “Mully” is now a part of my Rags to Riches rescue story contest. She is the 28th entry. I am only taking 30 entries, and 10 winners will share a $600+ prize contest. Damn good odds, wouldn’t you say?

Dr. Papidies: Colorado’s $1 million dog

Yesterday, Dr. Papidies won $1,000,000 in the Cutest Dog Competition. EVERY CENT is going to The Dumb Friends League & the Max Fund, Colorado’s No Kill Shelter.

His rescue adoptive mom, Leslie Capin, MD, is the medical director of Cara Mia Medical Day Spa and Dermatology Associates of Colorado.

Papidies is three years old and has Addison’s disease. He was rescued by Dr. Capin who got him the medical care that he needed. This disease in dogs is very similar to the human variety. It was one of the maladies that afflicted President John F. Kennedy.

Canine signs and symptoms include the following: weakness, vomiting, hypothermia, painful tummy, bloody stools, depression, heart irregularities, low blood pressure, and hair loss. The condition is a life threatening one and requires immediate treatment. Although it can be controlled with medication and close medical monitoring, owners of dogs with this disease must be extremely vigilant as they can go into crisis at any time and die.

Last year Dr Papidies helped Mom donate more than $30,000.00 to different charities. Being the mascot of Dermatology Associates of Colorado and Cara Mia, this adorable guy is involved with all of the benefits and fund raisers. They raised and gave money to Malignant Melanoma research, Psoriasis research, Adam’s Camp (for disabled children), The Rotary club for many of its wonderful charities, and The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Please give Golden Rescue girl Beetle Bailey some love – Updated

UPDATE: I am not happy. Bailey is being crushed in the voting. She’s competing against 1,000s of dogs so it is hard to see who is winning. But, I know of specific dogs that are leaving her in the dust. They are getting free radio air time or mentioned in web media to buoy their status. Bailey started out strong on the first day and now everyone has forgotten to vote again, as votes are needed 1x daily. Please check out her incredible journey and think about helping with a few moments of your time. I really think she doesn’t have a chance as there are dogs this weeks with literally thousands of votes.

A 12-week contest (now in its 10th week) that began on August 1st, 2009, has been awarding semi-finalists (one per week), each receiving $500 each. The Top 4 finalists will be chosen by the public from these 12 semi-finalist winners. The 3 runner up finalists will each receive $5000, and the grand prize winner, taking home $1,000,000 will be chosen by the judges from the top four finalists on Thanksgiving Day. Pretty exciting, huh?

Well, I have a very special senior sweetie named Bailey who needs your vote. Her dad, Greg Korycki, has been a huge rescue supporter and has been involved in several puppy mill operation rescues. Just look at this incredible “Rags to Wags” story.

Poor sweet girl . . . at the beginning

Beetle Bailey was a 9 year old, skinny 42lbs, non-spayed female Golden who was diagnosed with diabetes and had lost her sight. She also evidenced several tumors which needed to  be removed.  The owner realized that he wouldn’t be able to take  care of her and surrendered her to a Golden Retriever Rescue.

Bailey's eye surgeryFast forward, it was Golden Rescue who gave her eye surgery and her sight back, got her diabetes somewhat under control, rid her of the multiple nasty tumors, and had her spayed. And, while involved in her spay operation, they found even more tumors in addition to the others below and around her shoulders.

Every Golden Rescue has a Beetle Bailey. I think she’s been through a hell of a lot.

Greg and his wife adopted this young lady about 2 years ago and what a character she has been, even through all of this. They adopted her right before her eye surgery and waited for her recovery.

Since this past January, she has been battling chronic ear problems,
hyperparathyroidism, had an operation due to her high calcium levels, and had four different type bladder infections one after another, Finally, her diabetes glucose curve seems to be under control.

The family has had so many ups and downs, but through this she has been a trooper.

Beatle Bailey so content now

Greg has a house filled with rescue Goldens and Kitties. And, it looks to be one incredibly happy family there in Austin, Texas.  I sure do hope you can take the time to vote for Beetle Bailey. It will only cost you a few moments of time. And, please do pass this on to your friends and family, and especially other Golden Retriever lovers.

Many of the previous winning dogs’ owners are bloggers, facebook users, twitterers, etc.. This has generated many votes for their entries. Greg does not use any social media so he is really struggling. That is why I am trying to lend a hand here at my blog and via my twittering.

Bailey's current Contest Photo EntryHere is the exact photo that you will see at the contest page. Click above on Bailey’s photo or go directly to http://bit.ly/4tWKLx. Then, click on REGISTER TO VOTE. They will ask you for your email address and to make up a password (the contest will NOT sell you address and/or use it to send advertisements). This is to help keep the voting honest as people were using multiple addresses from the same computer in previous contests.

After clicking on ENTER, you will be sent back to Beetle’s picture to VOTE. The contest for Bailey will run from Oct 4  Sunday 12:01am thru Oct 10 Saturday 11:59pm. It would be great if you could vote the allowable once a day. I am heading over now to record my vote.

Send some love for this sweet girl. She really does deserve it.

Meet our Grand Prize *Golden* Winner!

Golden Retriever Tally & Best Friend Keller

“Keller and Golden Tally (Goldiva’s Tangled Up In Blue CGC) are the world’s best playmates. All they need is a simple stick to have a blast as long as they’re together.” — Photographer Laura Jill Simmons.

It doesn’t get much sweeter than this. Come check out all the winners in our prize-packed contest.

Golden Gardeners Photo Contest: Winners announced!

We have just selected the winners in our Golden Gardeners Contest. Folks needed to submit their best Golden Retriever ‘gardening’ photos and complete the following sentence: “This is my Golden’s idea of gardening . . .”

Below, you can see our 1st place winner, a wonderful trio of photos submitted by Donna Johnson. To see all the fabulous winners and experience their stories, be sure to click here.

Golden Retriever Tye

Golden Retriever Brooklyn

Golden Retriever Delta

This is my Golden’s idea of gardening . . .

Brooklyn says: “Ah.. I love the fresh mud dad just filled this new planter with for mom to put pretty flowers in. I heard mom say she would also like to add a good size tree right in the middle. I can help in that area but I may need to round up some help as it has to be a pretty good size hole I would think for a big tree.

Delta learned quickly from watching her Great Aunt and took her turn trying to get that hole deep enough for my new tree. And then there’s our little Tye, so innocent and I’m sure his thoughts were nothing but thanks to the girls for giving him a nice big hole to lay in!

Pure Golden Love

Two-year-old Golden Retriever Lily loves Kelsie to pieces

“The dog was created specially for children. He is the g-d of frolic.”
— Henry Ward Beecher

I absolutely adore this photo. Just look at how much love is in evidence between these two. I met Lily a couple years ago, and she is just the most demure and gentle dog you could ever meet.

It is an entry in my Kids and Paws Photo Contest, and comes from big Golden Retriever rescue supporter, Chandler Rudd (Kelsie is his granddaughter). But, amazingly it has NO votes at all! That is unbelievable, and in my opinion, just unacceptable. Come on guys, I need your votes on all the wonderful entries. You can vote for Lily by going here, or you can check out all 42 current entries by clicking here.

Our goal is to have 800 votes cast before awarding our $600+ prize package between the top 6 vote-getters. Currently, there are 531 total votes cast, so we are not too far away from this goal.

Of course, you too, can also still submit an entry in my Kids and Paws – Furever Love Photo Contest. The entries can incorporate any breed dog and any aged youngster (ages 0 to 18), so featuring a bond between the two.

And, remember, my nonprofit foundation’s contest will benefit not only the winning participants but 100% of the proceedings will go toward funding cancer treatment for our working dogs.

Rags to Riches Rescue Story Contest – Golden Retriever Tripp – Updated

There are too many champions of rescue to count. The job they do is a noble one and often not as rewarded in our society. Yet, we all know that the main rewards are very much emotional in nature. To thank these wonderful folks who provide intake, fostering, and adopting, I have created this special prize-filled ($500+) rescue story contest.

After alerting his family to a fire in the house, Tripp, a three-legged dog, received the Golden Retriever Club of America’s G.R.A.C.E. award, given to rescued Goldens with significant and exceptional accomplishments.

I am looking for irresistible tales that capture your dog’s wonderful ‘rags to wags’ transformation. You know, those truly compelling stories that reside only in the heart (click here to enter).

We have our very first entry, entitled “Unconditional Love”. It details the story of Golden Retriever Tripp, a dog who has already been included at the Land of PureGold due to his heroic efforts. We actually have close to 100 Golden heroes, with new tales added all the time. You can find them here.

Tripp’s lovely mom, Ellen Franklin, just shared this tasty anecdote with me about Tripp. Enjoy!

I cannot tell you how honored we were to be able to go out there and accept the GRACE award.  Tripp got to fly inside the cabin with me and slept all the way out there!  While we were at the airport getting ready to fly home, many people came up to us and said “That’s Tripp!!!  I saw him on TV last night!”  The captain of the plane even announced him as a celebrity hero and everyone clapped for him.  Of course after that, he got little sleep going home because he had to visit all the passengers on the plane.  He is such a hotdog!

Once again, I give our thanks to you and to RAGofAZ.  His story continues to gain notoriety.  He was recently honored at one of our elementary schools as a community hero and of course the children fell in love with him.  He goes everywhere with me and everyone seems to know him.  He never meets a stranger!  He continues to warm the hearts of many and I truly believe he is an angel in disguise!  (a spoiled rotten angel, but an angel, nonetheless!)

Please do share this fun news with others who help provide our beloved furry ones with second chances.

Rescue is a great and really noble way to obtain a canine companion. First, it allows you to give a dog a great home. And, it often allows you to avoid the pains of puppyhood by adopting an adult dog. But, it takes a special person to try and repair the bad times that rescue dogs have often experienced. For this reason, rescue adoptions are often very serious business. That is, you must prove that you have the time to make the necessary commitment. You also must show that you are a kind and caring individual who can provide intelligently for this needy guy’s or gal’s health needs. To thank our many important rescuers and adopters, we have created this special rescue story contest.

We are looking for irresistible tales that capture your dog’s wonderful ‘rags to wags’ transformation. You know, those truly compelling stories that reside only in the heart. Folks need to communicate just why their rescue dog deserves to be King or Queen for the Day. Please join us in our fun new contest, Cece Kent’s gorgeous Cambridge Collar & matching Cambridge Lead — a set valued at $180 — awarded to our grand prize winner. Cece Kent’s dog fashion line offers a fine touch of elegance, with this gift truly befitting a lucky canine king or queen. Other wonderful prizes from our Foundation Store round out the total $500+ prize package for our top ten tales. Click here to see our entries as they arrive.

Okay, let’s get real now.

This is just crazy. I’ve been running a fun Kids and Paws – Furever Love Photo Contest for a bit now and am thoroughly bewildered at the lack of votes for some of the incredible entries. For instance, all of the fabulous entries below have 0 votes. Zero, none, zip, nada.

This is Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Abby, and Kiersten, who have been buddies since birth. Here they are sharing bath time.

Black Lab mix Kira and Katherine are enjoying the warm weather and also a quiet moment together.

Senior Golden Maddie and 6-year-old Brianna Johnso are enjoying a day of swimming in the pool.

Sweet 3-year-old Dylan was off to take a nap and next thing Mom knew, her four legged and two legged son were spooning. They are best of friends, Golden Diesel a loving big brother.

Go vote on these entries or go here to check out the other 38 that we have so far. And, remember, my foundation’s contest will benefit not only the winning participants but 100% of the proceedings will go toward funding cancer treatment for our working dogs.

Viva Las Vegas!!

It was such a surprise last night to see Pam Martin, of Top Dog Dallas Dog Training, performing with her Viva on America’s Got Talent. We cannot wait to see what she has planned for her next routine.

Pam is a close friend of famous freestyler Carolyn Scott, as they have worked together for several years, and can be seen in our upcoming documentary, Gotta Dance.

Below, is one of Pam’s newest training ventures with the skateboard. “Spy”, a Jack Russell Terrier mix, is in skateboard training. So far he really likes it.

Check out lots of fun videos at Pam’s Top Dog Youtube Channel. She is quite an amazing lady, that’s for sure!

Golden Tally . . . what a charmer!

This is Entry 14 from my Kids and Paws – Furever Love Photo Contest. Golden Retriever Tally and pal Keller are currently in the lead with 86 votes, but there is one challenger nipping at their heels.

Dress-up or bubbles. Fun for all kids, furry or not!

I just received these adorable entries. This is Entry 34 from my Kids and Paws – Furever Love Photo Contest. I just love when kids play dress-up with our Golden Retrievers and they just smile merrily and enjoy it somehow.

Here are Goldens Kelly and Ridley (left to right) with sweet little Emily between. They are trying different hats on in the old boat.

And, this is Entry 35 from my Kids and Paws – Furever Love Photo Contest. What I love about this one is how everyone, furry or not, seems to be enjoying themselves.

Everyone is enjoying the bubbles. There are Golden Retrievers Ridley, Kelly, and Morgan (left to right). Sarah is in charge of making bubbles while Emily is embracing her fur pals and just loving it all.

Go vote on these entries or check out the other 34 that we have so far. And, remember, my foundation’s contest

FOOD! WHERE?

Find the Food with Goldens (left to right) Amber, Ernie & Josey

This is Entry 4 from my Kids and Paws – Furever Love Photo Contest. I just love it to pieces as we all know how equal opportunity Goldens hone in on a child (just at their level) with food. Kids and Paws — Furever Love Photo Contest

I needed a cheer-me-up, so what better way than soliciting photos of dogs with kids. So, now that the school year is ending, folks should have lots of opportunity to get those irresistible photos.

There are no more heartfelt images than those which showcase the bond between kids and animals. W.C. Fields once said, “Never work with children or animals.” That’s because these special souls will upstage and outshine all that surrounds them. And, what better way to celebrate the bond between kids and dogs than with a photo contest that will benefit not only the winning participants but also a worthy charity dedicated to helping our four-legged friends?

It costs nothing to enter and there is a HUGE $600 prize package, so please provide your most adorable photos. They can incorporate any breed dog and any aged youngster (ages 0 to 18), so featuring a bond between the two. Just click here to enter.

Katrina Rescue Girl, Tess, needs our help

Katrina Rescue Girl, Tess

Katrina Rescue "Sweet Girl" Tess

Looking at Tess here, I know that she is now living a wonderful forever life with her new adoptive parents. She’s a true survivor being a Katrina rescue. Tess was found tethered to a front porch, dehydrated and pregnant. Like so many families, Tess’ owners thought they would return. But, she is now with a lovely family, in what will certainly be her forever home. According to Joe, Tess simply loves sleeping in on Sunday mornings …. as well as chasing their one-horned Goat, Yoda.

Tess’ proud daddy, Joe, entered her in a contest to help raise awareness and monies for some wonderful rescue organizations.

For a couple weeks now, I’ve been telling you about my dog, Tess. Many of you know how important animal and wildlife issues are to me, so Tess’ story may come as no surprise to you, but I thought you’d enjoy some background on this dog who faced down death and now lives at Cummings Creek Farm.

In 2005, as Hurricane Katrina approached New Orleans and families fled the city, forced to take only what they could carry to make it through the days that followed, thousands of pets were not so lucky and were left to ride out the storm. After the floodwaters receded and the first responders were allowed back in to inspect what remained, they were faced with finding owners for the animals now left homeless. Like so many others, Tess was found tied to the porch of her home, malnourished and expecting puppies of her own. After a long fight back to health, we adopted Tess and brought her to live at the farm with my wife Kathy and me. This dog has seen it all, we’re so glad to have her with us.

So that brings us to today. For a few more weeks, you can vote for Tess in the Humane Society’s Spay Day photo contest. The Humane Society has been advocating for the adoption of rescued animals like her for a long time, so it would be great to see her on top.

Right now, Tess is in third place! Will you help her get into the lead??

Thanks to those of you who have already cast your votes. If you haven’t signed up your pet, there’s still time. Click here to sign up today (after you vote for Tess.)

Where are my Golden Retriever Gardeners?

Here are two gardeners, both being silly, of course. The first is Golden Retriever Cali, who figured that the trees in her backyard needed trimming. And, Golden Retriever Rescue, River, loves sliding downhill, headfirst, through the leaves.

To celebrate adding an exciting new “topiary” whimsical artist to the Land of PureGold Foundation family, I have a fun and easy new Golden Gardeners Photo Contest.

Michelle Masters’ wonderful, unique topiary themed gifts for the home, gardener, and animal lover offer a blend of whimsy and elegance. Her collections incorporate watercolor depictions of topiary—living sculpture shaped by careful pruning into a broad range of decorative items.

I just adore Michelle’s “Shear Bliss” art. Who says a Golden wouldn’t enjoy a couch made from a topiary hedge?

Please join us in our fun new contest, Michelle Masters’ Golden wares presented as prizes! We are looking for irresistible gardening photos that capture your Golden Retriever Gardening Helper, entries also completing the following: “This is my Golden’s idea of gardening . . .”.

Here is our most recent entry from special Golden (CCI Puppy Raising) pal, Pat Lawson.

Tavi really isn't much of a gardener, except when the oranges are ripe. He is a master harvester! The only problem is, he eats as much as he picks... all in a Golden's Day's Work.

Here is our first entry from special Golden pal, Geoff. I tell you, his Sam is getting mighty famous around these parts. Dad just cannot keep from trying to capture his sweetness on film.

Sam's idea of gardening is finding the best plant for a bed. Hostas seem to be his favorite.

Heartland Golden Retriever Rescue has a simple request

hl.jpg

Our Golden rescues are all now trying to be the recipients of the latest large cash reward, this time via the Bissell MVP Pet Photo Contest. We actually urged folks to vote during one of the previous voting periods (you can only vote once per period) for a rescue Golden named Sizzle. She did not win for her voting period, but got enough votes to proceed to the finals.

chad.jpgWe have a new Golden Rescue sweetheart for the voting period that extends through February 26th. He comes from Tennessee’s Heartland Golden Retriever Rescue, a rescue that really could use some financial assistance. His name is Chad and with a smile like his, I cannot imagine anyone being able to resist voting for him. I know I could just eat him right up looking at this adorable photo here.

Please take a few seconds to get on over to vote for Chad. And, spread the news to all your friends as well so that we can get him the votes he needs to be a finalist. Just click on Chad to vote.

And, provide the following tiny link to your friends as well so that they can vote:
