I have always loved Al Franken – Update . . . Senator Franken!

I wrote the following post on January 17, 2008. I cannot believe it has taken this long for him finally to *win* the election.

____________________________________

al.jpgSince early Saturday Night Live days, I have always enjoyed Al Franken. His wit is so incredibly quick and you can tell there is a huge storehouse of knowledge that lurks below his creative use of satire. His Harvard education attests to that, of course.

I have read one of his books and was so riveted by his recounting of an accidental meeting on a flight that he had with Bush’s (the decider) mom. It told me more than I wanted to know about how Bush came to be as psychologically bereft as he is.

While I am not from Al’s neck of the woods in Minnesota (just locating it on a map would be a challenge for my spacially-challenged self), I am rooting for him to beat Norm Coleman in the upcoming elections.

He has just begun his tv campaign ads (which typically are as annoying as the lackluster commercials we are bombarded with) and I must say I was really impressed. I think it was the teacher in me as I was a special educator before becoming a school psychologist. My big sister would probably like it as well as she has been a 4th grade teacher for 30 years.

Mrs. Molin

The video clip below from Al Franken is definitely not light-hearted. But, boy does it show that this man is far more than just a performer.

Obstructionist Conservatives truly are “damaging the fabric of governance”

I really was not in the greatest of moods (given Golden Alfie’s current situation), but when I read this article this morning about another hold on an Obama nominee I just couldn’t NOT comment.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) has blocked Harvard law professor Cass Sunstein from heading the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs because of his position on animal rights. In a 2004 book, Sunstein wrote: “I will suggest that animals should be permitted to bring suit, with human beings as their representatives, to prevent violations of current law.”

More specifically, Professor Sunstein wrote: “Laws designed to protect animals against cruelty and abuse should be amended or interpreted to give a private cause of action against those who violate them, so as to allow private people to supplement the efforts of public prosecutors.” Chambliss is supposedly troubled by  Sunstein’s potential impact on this as well as many other agriculture related issues.

I am cheered by the fact that Cass Sunstein believes that there should be much greater regulation of the use of animals in entertainment, in scientific experiments, and in agriculture — the spotlight needing to rest squarely on the issue of suffering and well-being.

Actually, 21 Obama nominees for important posts remain unconfirmed.

Most of the stranded nominees have long since had hearings and majority approval by Senate committees and meetings with lawmakers. None of the nominees have been tainted by scandal or had their core competence questioned. And yet, they remain unconfirmed — one for more than three months and several others for more than a month — mainly because of holds, often anonymous and unexplained, by Republican senators.

Holds are effectively a filibuster, requiring 60 votes to overcome. Used legitimately, they can buy time to clear up unanswered questions about a nominee’s qualifications. But the current widespread holds of uncertain duration are obstructionism. Writing in the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call, Norman Ornstein, a Congressional scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, said the mass delays are “damaging the fabric of governance.”

The 2004 animal rights books attributed to Cass Sunstein is an important one. Animal Rights: Current Debates and New Directions is a seminal 2004 book edited by Cass R. Sunstein and Martha C. Nussbaum.

Millions of people live with cats, dogs, and other pets, which they treat as members of their families. But through their daily behavior, people who love those pets, and greatly care about their welfare, help ensure short and painful lives for millions, even billions of animals that cannot easily be distinguished from dogs and cats. Today, the overwhelming percentage of animals with whom Westerners interact are raised for food. Countless animals endure lives of relentless misery and die often torturous deaths.

The use of animals by human beings, often for important human purposes, has forced uncomfortable questions to center stage: Should people change their behavior? Should the law promote animal welfare? Should animals have legal rights? Should animals continue to be counted as “property”? What reforms make sense?

Cass Sunstein and Martha Nussbaum bring together an all-star cast of contributors to explore the legal and political issues that underlie the campaign for animal rights and the opposition to it. Addressing ethical questions about ownership, protection against unjustified suffering, and the ability of animals to make their own choices free from human control, the authors offer numerous different perspectives on animal rights and animal welfare. They show that whatever one’s ultimate conclusions, the relationship between human beings and nonhuman animals is being fundamentally rethought. This book offers a state-of-the-art treatment of that rethinking.

Just look at some of the reviews:

“Our society is in the midst of a major debate over animal rights, our duties, and the legal status of animals. This new compilation of essays has profoundly contributed to this debate…. Animal Rights is an incredible resource introducing readers to the basic issues in animal rights and highlighting directions animal advocates may go.” — Animal Law

“An important and thought-provoking work. Sunstein and Nussbaum illuminate issues that have the power to unite or divide those of us who care deeply about animals. By fostering better understanding, their book can help light the pathway to common ground.” — Kathryn S. Fuller, President, World Wildlife Fund – US

“Several chapters…discuss political and legal changes that could drastically improve the lives of animals without giving them rights or personhood. …This is a book political decision makers should read.” — The Law and Politics Book Review

Golden lovin’ & savin’ Sam Connelly made my day!

A Serious Golden Retriever Salsa ready for her next important mission

Sam Connelly became known to the Land of PureGold when she won Fourth Place in our Treasured Golden Bonds Storywriting Contest, with: Emilee, The Throw Away Dog. Sam also provided us with a wonderful tracking tale: Darla Lost and Found. An experienced Search & Rescue professional, Sam recently formed her own company, Pure Gold Pet Trackers, the team consisting of Sam and her Golden Retrievers, Salsa & Brando.

Working dog teams (including scent dogs for SAR, tracking & trailing; substance detection dogs for agriculture, explosives, human remains, etc.) do their jobs under the most hazardous environmental conditions to help find the lost, bring help to the injured, and so much more. So, finding a cost-effective and safe product to make their lives easier would genuinely be a great help.

For whatever reason, Sam happened onto my website within a week of my adding Liquid Net for Pets, a new, natural flea, tick & insect repellent product. She ordered two bottles. And, this is what happened . . . .

[June 6, 2009] It has been such a horrible year for ticks. I have had numerous searches in Virginia where my Golden Salsa and I were bitten so badly that I look like I just got over the worst case of chicken pox. We’re positive for Lyme Disease, but at the moment our bodies are successfully fighting off the disease and we are without symptoms.
I just feel bad for Salsa because her fur is so thick and fluffy that the ticks are just all over her as soon as she goes through the first field of tall grass. We had one search in Ashburn, VA where I pulled nearly 100 ticks off of her after only three hours of tracking. It was disgusting. When I ran my hand down her front legs they felt like washboards from all of the ticks. She has been on Frontline Plus and then I switched to K9 Advantix and neither has stopped the ticks. The only comfort is that any ticks I miss will die as soon as they bite her. I would love something that actually repels them and can be used on both of us. So I’m really looking forward to trying Liquid Net for Pets Ultimate Flea, Tick & Insect Repellent. And, BELIEVE ME, if it works as well as it says, I will be letting you know.

[Ten days later] I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The two Liquid Net for Pets bottles I just purchased are gifts for rescue managers that I work with who spend a lot of time out chasing lost foster dogs in Virginia—which has got to be one of the most tick-ridden places I have ever searched. I can put Liquid Net for Pets on my face (I’m allergic to EVERYTHING and most repellents cause me to break out in a rash), in my hair, on my clothes, on my DOG (which is so fantastic because I worry about causing her to not be able to smell when I use chemicals on her), and my gear.

Last night we were tracking a little Italian Greyhound down in Richmond that got away from a boarding kennel. We were in woods and in a field with grass and weeds that were up to our chests and when we got home there wasn’t a tick on either of us! The owner of the dog who has been looking for her little dog for two weeks now— and has been plagued with ticks every time she goes anywhere off of paved areas — called me this morning and begged me to send her the link for the spray, because she didn’t have any ticks either this time. This is a wonderful product and I will be recommending it to everyone I know. Thanks for introducing this to us. I’m going to take a picture of Salsa wearing her tracking harness sitting next to the bottle! — Sam Connelly

In the video below Sam demonstrates two pet tracking techniques, air scent tracking and straight tracking.

Go visit Sam’s website, Pure Gold Pet Trackers, to pick up some GReat tips on how to keep your pets safe, and on what to do if they get lost.

And, be sure to get some Liquid Net for Pets for your treasured dogs and yourself as well, this strength perfect for adults as you can tell by Sam’s immersing her whole body in it [ingredients shown below].

  • Citronella Oil – essential oil derived form different species of ‘lemon grass’, a natural animal and insect repellent.
  • Cedarwood Oil – fragrant natural insect repellent. Cedar has been used for centuries to repel various insects, and is regarded for it’s fresh clean scent.

  • Water essential to all known forms of life and is known as the universal solvent. Used to dissolve and mix active ingredients to allow them to be readily applied.

Dress-up or bubbles. Fun for all kids, furry or not!

I just received these adorable entries. This is Entry 34 from my Kids and Paws – Furever Love Photo Contest. I just love when kids play dress-up with our Golden Retrievers and they just smile merrily and enjoy it somehow.

Here are Goldens Kelly and Ridley (left to right) with sweet little Emily between. They are trying different hats on in the old boat.

And, this is Entry 35 from my Kids and Paws – Furever Love Photo Contest. What I love about this one is how everyone, furry or not, seems to be enjoying themselves.

Everyone is enjoying the bubbles. There are Golden Retrievers Ridley, Kelly, and Morgan (left to right). Sarah is in charge of making bubbles while Emily is embracing her fur pals and just loving it all.

Go vote on these entries or check out the other 34 that we have so far. And, remember, my foundation’s contest

Senator Ensign has always been a ladies’ man

Blonde bombshell Darcy with Nevada veterinarian, Senator Ensign

Given the news today of blackmail necessitating his revealing an extramarital affair, I think Senator Ensign should have stayed with his vet practice. What really bothers me, though, is the hypocrisy.

Since his election to the Senate in 2000, Ensign has been a leading conservative voice who demanded the resignation of former Idaho Sen. Larry Craig in September 2007. Ensign called Craig a “disgrace” after he was arrested in June 2007 in an airport men’s restroom on disorderly conduct charges. But when Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) acknowledged having an affair, Ensign didn’t call on him to resign.

Ensign has also been an ardent opponent of gay marriage. In Feb. 2004, Ensign announced his support for an amendment to the Constitution that would have defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Ensign said the amendment, which ultimately failed, was necessary to protect “the institution of marriage“.

In 1998, while running for Nevada’s Senate seat against Harry Reid, Ensign called on President Clinton to resign in light of his admitted affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky: “I came to that conclusion recently, and frankly it’s because of what he put his whole Cabinet through and what he has put the country through,” Ensign said Thursday, becoming the first member of the Nevada delegation to call for Clinton to quit. “He has no credibility left.”

I actually met Senator Ensign on December 7, 2000 during a visit that I did with Darcy at the U.S. Senate. The November 2000 U.S. Senate race in Nevada brought us Dr. Ensign. John Ensign was first elected to Congress in 1994 after leaving a successful veterinary practice. Before being elected to Congress, Dr. Ensign opened and operated the first 24-hour animal hospital in Las Vegas.

Unable to defeat Harry Reid in the 1998 U.S. Senate election, he then returned to the practice of veterinary medicine. But, wanting to get back to Washington, he ran again and was now successful.

Senator-Elect Ensign thought Darcy was wonderful and actually commented on her great appearance and beautiful white teeth. And, we found out that Goldens had been a part of his family as well.

My only question is this: was his married staffer a blonde as well?

FOOD! WHERE?

Find the Food with Goldens (left to right) Amber, Ernie & Josey

This is Entry 4 from my Kids and Paws – Furever Love Photo Contest. I just love it to pieces as we all know how equal opportunity Goldens hone in on a child (just at their level) with food. Go vote on this entry or check out the other 29 that we have so far. Kids and Paws — Furever Love Photo Contest

I needed a cheer-me-up, so what better way than soliciting photos of dogs with kids. So, now that the school year is ending, folks should have lots of opportunity to get those irresistible photos.

There are no more heartfelt images than those which showcase the bond between kids and animals. W.C. Fields once said, “Never work with children or animals.” That’s because these special souls will upstage and outshine all that surrounds them. And, what better way to celebrate the bond between kids and dogs than with a photo contest that will benefit not only the winning participants but also a worthy charity dedicated to helping our four-legged friends?

It costs nothing to enter and there is a HUGE $600 prize package, so please provide your most adorable photos. They can incorporate any breed dog and any aged youngster (ages 0 to 18), so featuring a bond between the two. Just click here to enter.

Golden Retriever Bingley saved his own life

A terrible situation became one of triumph here. We all simply love heroes, 2 and 4-footed ones both.

18-unit apartment building in Orono gutted by fire
23 tenants displaced; golden retriever ‘saved his own life’

Known locally as the Katahdin Building, the circa-1830 brick structure over the years has housed a tavern, the town’s first public library, a bank and offices. In recent decades, the original brick portion and wood additions built later had been converted into 18 apartment units. It also was one of a handful of area apartment buildings in which dogs were allowed to live.

In a scene that brought cheers and tears from the hundreds of spectators who converged at the intersection, a firefighter emerged nearly two hours after the fire started carrying a golden retriever named Bingley who had initially been presumed dead.

Though wet, shivering and a little wild-eyed, Bingley otherwise appeared to be in good condition considering his ordeal. Medical personnel noted some singed fur on his hindquarters but little other apparent damage.

Bingley’s owner, recent UM graduate Jennifer Dunham, was overcome with emotion and declined comment Tuesday evening as she watched emergency rescue personnel dry her dog off with a towel and administer oxygen through one of the special masks for animal rescues recently donated to the Orono Fire Department.

Richard Bowie of the Down East Emergency Medical Institute, who was among dozens of rescue personnel at the scene, said the dog was found on the second floor of the original brick section of the building in a foot of water. The dog had squeezed himself into a small space to escape the fire.

“That dog saved his own life,” Bowie said Tuesday.

“I’m speechless,” UM student Patrick Scholz said shortly after the dog was carried over to a waiting ambulance.

Not happy campers, are we

Golden Retriever Alfie with one of his favorite woobies

I have not been up to blogging this past week due to dealing with medical issues at home. Alfie had surgery yesterday and it seemed like he took forever to wake up. Healing is not great and seeing him in discomfort is of course very tough.

I am sure he will be better soon but for the time being I will not be on line much at all.

Tarra the Elephant & Bella the dog … Disney Movie? NOT!

Tarra (elephant) and Bella (dog) have attracted the folks at Disney. At the nonprofit Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee where 18 elephants have found a second home, these too have found themselves needing talent agents after the great news story in January.

_____________________________

Below is the post of this connection that I had up 5 months ago:

Animal Odd Couple … the most amazing story you will ever see

Tarra, and, underneath, Bella. Also, sanctuary co-founder Scott Blais with the duo.

Special Golden friend Jessica (h/t) shared this incredible tale with me. I am just speechless. It says so much, on multiple levels, striking an important cord in a world characterized by aggression towards those who look different.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

I am concerned about how Tarra will handle one day losing her Bella, as elephants’ life spans mirror ours and Bella’s, of course, is significantly shorter. Elephants, who cry saltwater tears as we do, grieve deeply for those they love. So, I hope the folks at the sanctuary will be able to help her through the process.

FDA has approved Palladia, 1st drug to treat canine skin based mast cell tumors

FDA NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release: June 3, 2009
FDA: First Drug to Treat Cancer in Dogs Approved

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced the approval of Palladia (toceranib phosphate), the first drug developed specifically for the treatment of cancer in dogs.

Palladia is approved to treat canine cutaneous (skin-based) mast cell tumors, a type of cancer responsible for about 1 out of 5 cases of canine skin tumors. The drug is approved to treat the tumors with or without regional lymph node involvement.

All cancer drugs now used in veterinary medicine originally were developed for use in humans and are not approved for use in animals. Cancer treatments used in animals are used in an “extra-label” manner as allowed by the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act of 1994.

“This cancer drug approval for dogs is an important step forward for veterinary medicine,” said Bernadette Dunham, D.V.M., Ph.D., director of FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. “Prior to this approval, veterinarians had to rely on human oncology drugs, without knowledge of how safe or effective they would be for dogs. Today’s approval offers dog owners, in consultation with their veterinarian, an option for treatment of their dog’s cancer.”

While canine mast cell tumors often appear small and insignificant, they can be a very serious form of cancer in dogs. Some mast cell tumors are easily removed without the development of any further problems, while others can lead to life threatening disease.

Palladia is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor and works in two ways: by killing tumor cells and by cutting off the blood supply to the tumor. In a clinical trial, Palladia showed a statistically significant difference in tumor shrinkage when compared with an inactive substance (placebo).

The most common side effects associated with Palladia are diarrhea, decrease or loss of appetite, lameness, weight loss, and blood in the stool.

Palladia is manufactured by Pfizer Animal Health Inc., New York City.
