Dear Mr. Koontz,

I love your books and your internet blogs. I don't have a dog. I am 82 years old and am unable to handle a dog. If I could, I would have one just like Trixie and Iam sure it would be as loveable as Trixie.

I have two cats, Dych, rhymes with book, which is the Russian word for spirit, she is black. My other cat's name is Jelly, he is white and black and weighs 22 lbs. He looks like an Oreo cookie. I love them both.

I don't have you new book, but will get whenever I am able.

Keep writing, on the internet too.

That Jolly is still with you 4 months later is already a major accomplishment. This form of cancer is just so horrid. I will keep Jolly and his mom in my good thoughts.

my 10 year old golden retriever was diagnosed with fibrosarcoma in his nose on july 13. i'm feeding him an amazing diet made up of a chicken stew full of antioxidants and low fiber content veggies. he loves it!

your messages, though sad, are so helpful to me in a time like this. i have so much hope that i could beat this cancer that's eating it's way from the inside out of his nose ... we'll not give up.

love, jolly & his mom

I have watched the video of you two dancing fools so many times and each time is more special than the last. I just today learned of Rookie's trek over the Rainbow Bridge. My sincerest sympathy goes out to you. Having had two wonderful dogs, one a Cockapoo/Wirehair mix and the other a Tiny Toy Poodle, for over 30 years, I am comforted to know that they are together with Rookie, a true Golden oldie. My only sadness is that we outlive out wonderful friends.

Carol, so much pain. It just knocked me out to read about such a baby having to deal with this disease. We try to do everything, and I am so mindful of vaccinations, chemicals, food, you name it. But, we cannot battle genetics. Of course, despite that, I cannot imagine not having a Golden in my life.

I always felt fortunate when talking about our pup Barkley (his pix was on our office wall) and had heard many stories about goldens and their cancer battles...but I was still sadly surprised when at age 13 Barkley was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma with mets to the liver....We had him about 4 more weeks but then he could no longer stand and had lost 1/3 of his weight..It was more painful than we were ready for ... We did adopt delightful brother and sister golden pups about 6 weeks later when the silence of the house was "deafening" and we knew we needed to hear the clicky click of the tags...Lucy and Harry suddenly occupied the time that was spent grieving...we found out that we could talk and refer to Barkley without crying our eyes out..these two were just what we needed at the right time...sadly Harry had a lump at 16 months of age...about one year after we adopted him..we decided to treat him aggressively with surgery (x 2) radiation as well as chemo as this was an aggressive atypical spindle cell sarcoma ...I just knew that we would not lose another pup to cancer so soon...surely the treatments would work...we were good people--took good care of our pets and people (we were in human health care)so of course this outcome would be good for our quirky pup named Harry...sadly one year after treatment the monster named cancer returned with vengeance and we had to say goodbye to Harry 3 months later..two months shy of his 3rd birthday...One thing I noticed while waiting for Harry during his daily radiation visits was that each and every one of those 15 days in a row I met a new golden and their family registering at the oncologist's office....most with that same gleam in their eye that their dog was the one that was going to beat the dreaded C....and I hope they did...

Humans and dogs first interacted thousands of years ago with the caveman. Descendents of our current pets would feed on the scraps thrown out of the cave. In time, they stayed around the "home" and would clean up debris and guard the caveman and his family. Eventually, the "dogs" and man became friends and the dog was invited to live with the cave family.
And there you have it. It's no wonder there are so many of us living with dogs. It was just the natural way of life.

I watch your video of you and Rookie almost daily.I love it.It is the most beautiful illustration of the bond between two Special species.I know the pleasure you must have experienced, and I am so sorry at your loss.
It is just one year since I lost my beloved Goldie,Zaki, also at 15 years.
Zaki was the nicest living being I will ever meet.It was my greatest privilege to share 15 1/2 years with him.It did not matter what type of animal, bird or whatever he met,Zaki knew how to play THEIR games.His/my pet Aylesbury duck was almost "joined at the hip" with him. They were a laugh a minute, rolling about together.Fortunately I have some video to remember them by.
Even 15 minutes before Zaki "crossed the Rainbow Bridge",as he lay on his side, and in pain,he was still mouthing my other Golden Retriever,Riley, in play,it was so moving.
Thank you for sharing your moments and reminding me of mine,it helps the loss.

With thoughts of Rookie and his lovely attitude toward life, I, this week adopted a 1 year old Golden Retriever, Baxter, a cruelty seizure, from the local Humane Society.
He is dreadfully thin, heartworm positive, and has a healing wound from an imbedded collar. Despite this, that wonderful, happy, trusting nature characteristic of the breed shines through. I almost named him "Rookie" but the shelter had already given him a name, and Baxter somehow fits.
I would never have known how special Goldens are had it not been for the Rookie videos. His joy shines through in every one of them.
I just wanted you to know that Rookie continues to have an effect in this world, and still inspires others to do good where we can in his memory.

May I please offer some simple words that brought me comfort after the loss of the many beloved critters , some with feathers, or finned, & also all of our many furry faced friends, both large & small, we loved them all & do believe

" LOVE IS ETERNAL,
THE ASPECT MAY CHANGE,
BUT NOT THE ESSENCE. "

Memories are the pictures we will always carry in a special place deep in our hearts.

They have all left paw prints, hoof prints, footprints forever on our hearts.

Sorry, Rochelle. We (ICRA and I) have been busy on something else for the last few weeks - an infuriating case of kitten abuse. This has been going on for years, but the abuser was finally busted last week, thank God. And there's a happy ending: The kittens have turned out to be amazingly resilient and are doing extremely well in their foster homes, especially considering what they went through. I posted a story about two of them on my blog a couple of days ago.
The alleged abuser is being held without bail.
Meanwhile, Rosie is mothering her latest batch of kittens, so she's happy. But this abuse case has her mom pretty occupied, so no new pictures for a while. But I'll ask her to send me some as soon as she takes them.

This past weekend was the one year anniversary of the passing of our almost 16-year old Golden girl, Nika, an event which just devastated my husband, Greg, my mother, Emma, and me. We had 15+ remarkable years with Nika who loved to hike, swim and snowshoe with us in the Rockies, where she spent much of her life. She also lived with us in Mexico and became fluent in Spanish!!! She didn't really dance, but she liked to leap and twirl to the Beatles!

Anyway, I thought of you and Rookie and found the landof puregold website in my favorites and took a moment to laugh and cry at you and Rookie celebrating your remarkable relationship through dance. When I discovered that he had crossed the Rainbow bridge a few months before Nika, I wanted to offer my empathy and my thanks to you and Rookie for touching the hearts and minds of so many people.

We now have Gaby, a one-year old Golden girl, who is showing the signs of being a wonderful companion. She will never replace Nika, but, in becoming her special self, she is helping our hearts heal through love.

Thank you again, Carolyn, for showing the world the special joy and heart that Goldens bring to us............

I still grieve for my golden, Ursa, gone just before Christmas. I can not look at another golden without feeling the pain after all these months. My husband and I accepted a Kleekai pup into our house to be a companion for our three year old golden Husky to help her stop searching for Ursa. There will never be another like we lost, but we find joy in the antics of our two. We wish joy to anyone in a new dog companion.

Your Cash boy is beautiful. I have a soft spot for Collies myself. I own an eleven old tri collie called Brodie which I have done some freestyle with.
Good luck with your new fur friend.

Thanks, but she has no chance at all. Some other dogs with media support have over 4000 votes. But, I did try to help. Folks had to vote daily this entire week so getting involved now will probably not do much good. Too bad you didn't see my posting at the beginning of the week.

You're a doll. If you only knew what Greg has done for Rescue, often driving runs and going across country and helping with puppy mill rescues. He has no connections and I only wish I had a greater presence to take him over the top. The folks that win are ones getting picked up by media, like radio or even in CNN articles. No one else can compete.

He has a house filled with Golden and kitty rescues that have all suffered greatly before they arrived at his home.

Don't forget to vote daily this week and get anyone to vote as well. Maybe you can blog it as well .... since your and your Barbie vet asst. are so famous these days.

I am so sorry for your loss. I just lost my cocker spaniel last May. The pain is still great. I am a second grade teacher and have done so for 35 years. I always used my dogs in my teachings because it brings in real life experiences that children can identify with. I have showed you and Rookie dancing to "You're the One that I Want" so many, many times. They, as well as I, still enjoy the wonderful grace, charm, and beauty you both showed. My prayers to with you each time I watch the video "Trubute to Rookie" The love is so evident for all of us who love our dogs as family. God bless you and Rookie for bringing such joy into my life.

Hi there,

I was looking up information when this popped up. Who knew? My dog's oncologist is on someone else's website! He is awesome! I just want to make sure everyone knows...he is REALLY REALLY AWESOME. He is a good man, he's funny and he's cool. He gets dogs. He cares about making the right decision for your pet. He's awesome.

Between my husband and Dr. Rodriguez they came up with a different system for the inhalation therapy using the cone that is used for anesthesia (not sure of the name). But it only goes over the muzzle and leaves their eyes/ears free. Our dog really does well with it! This treatment is 45 minutes-1 hour, but we take that time to get a massage in-which she loves. She has had no side effects from this form of chemo. Thought I'd throw that in there for anyone who runs across this while researching his study. Also, feel free to check out my dog's blog at www.cairasue.tripawds.com

Thanks!

Yes, Paige, he lives in New Jersey. But, who knows where he ventures out since he has this little habit of not doing what he is told. He has never been a responsible dog owner and never gone to a formal dog obedience class in his life. NOT ONE. You forget, he knows far more about dogs and everything thing else, than any body on the planet. It must be nice to be so brilliant and carefree.
